Avoid setting tree up in direct sunlight as this will dry out the tree faster

Before putting your tree in the stand, use a hand saw to cut about 2cm off the base of trunk. Then place tree in water ASAP

Use Christmas Tree lights that produce low heat and turn the lights off each night before going to bed
